On December 31, 2021, the ultra-low temperature steel 9Ni steel plate for LNG (liquefied natural gas) storage tanks produced by Hyundai Steel passed the quality inspection certification of KOGAS (Korea Natural Gas Corporation). The thickness of the 9Ni steel plate is 6 mm to 45 mm, and the maximum width is 4.5 meters, which is currently the widest in the world. The approval of this certification further enhances Hyundai Steel’s market competitiveness in South Korea.
It is reported that in order to pass this certification, Hyundai Steel and welding material manufacturer Hyundai General Metals Co., Ltd. have realized the localization of all welding materials. Hyundai Steel said that the localization of welding materials can save about 30% of the cost compared with the use of imported materials.
9Ni steel thick plate is an ultra-high-performance thick plate product used to ensure the safety of marine and land LNG storage tanks. Its main features are high nickel content and high purity. Maintaining high strength and excellent impact toughness, it is one of the main materials used to manufacture large LNG storage tanks.
